What is Optical Router?

The optical fiber technology is based on the principle of carrying the data at the speed of light. The optical routers use optical switching techniques in order to work. The optical routers are able to provide IP at a speed of light.

Features of an Optical Router

The optical router has many features which makes it distinct form the others of its kind. The basic purpose of a router is to deliver the intended packets to its destination. The optical routers are much more competitive than ordinary routers. Optical routers have multiple input and output ports. It is equipped with the number of transmitters. There is a polarization controller which is installed between the plurality of transmitters and plurality of input ports. It is also embedded with a clock which helps in transmitting signals to the port.

Benefits of Using Optical Router

The high speed optical routers help the internet service providers to cater the needs of their customers well plus it enables them to provide many value added services. It can help in providing the services like video and audio conversations, internet applications and the high speed for network. Some of the optical routers work so well that they can provide a speed of up to 256 Gbps. Moreover OR (optical router) is able to transfer 30 million frames or packets per second. Hence you can judge the speed of the optical routers very well. These routers are capable of providing different IP services at very fast speed. These routers work on the principle of optical wavelengths which is considered to as the working technology for next generation routers. O is able to provide very fast throughput. It offers low latency. It performs quick routing and is capable enough to proffer multicast activities. It is able to communicate with the modern circuit switching networks. The data transfer rte is really quick because it is able to carry data at a very fast rate. The use of optical routers can also save the time for optical to electrical and then again to optical conversion. Hence the data packets are transferred to correct destinations in no time.

The Optical IP Switching Mechanisms

The process of creating translucent optical connection using network nodes to support the flow of IP packets it is known as IP switching.  When a collection of IP packets is going from same source to identical destination, it is referred to as IP flow. It is this mechanism of IP flow which governs the transport of information on the internet. The need for optical routers arouse when it needed to support the large number of data carried through small flow of IP packets. Usually a packet has to travel across several routers before reaching its destination. The traditional network routers analyze one packet after the other and then carry it forward. Whereas in IP switching the optical router analyzes the flow of the packet, hence a short cut is created, which allows the smooth packet flow in correct direction without having to analyze the packets separately.  The optical routers are able to transfer data of many gigabytes in seconds; hence it is very difficult to find an IP flow which is capable of utilizing the entire bandwidth. Therefore in order to increase the efficiency of the system a set of IP flow is combined to direct to travel over same path. In order to improve the overall efficacy of the system the IP flow should contain the data packets which allow the considerable network leap should be bound together. IP switching mechanism is an intelligent technology which can provide optimization and improvement to the use of IP packet and data transfer.
